An 18-year-old who was named as a suspect in the brutal Santa Ana beating that left a 72-year-old man hospitalized has turned himself in to police and been placed under arrested.
The surrender of Samuel Elijah Alvarez, 18, was announced by the Santa Ana Police Department on Twitter Thursday, a day after police asked for help in the case.
He came with an attorney to the Santa Ana police station about 2 p.m., the department later said in a news release.
Alvarez was suspected of wielding an aluminum baseball bat to beat Jose Chacon at the 76 station at 4502 Westminster St. on Sunday evening.
Chacon slipped and accidentally struck Alvarez’s car, prompting the teen to get out and fight with him verbally, and then physically, police said.
Chacon tried to defend himself but ended up the intensive care unit, his daughter told KTLA.
He had multiple facial fractures and other injuries to his body, the police news release stated Thursday.
Alvarez was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He was not eligible for parole due to a warrant for possession of brass knuckles and a probation violation.
