Both a police officer and a suspected gang member were wounded after an exchange of gunfire in Santa Ana on Wednesday afternoon.
Gang enforcement officers with the Santa Ana Police Department were doing "proactive activity" about 3:30 p.m. when they contacted a "suspect," prompting an exchange of gunfire for an unknown reason, police spokesman Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told KTLA.
The shooting took place in the 2700 block of McFadden Avenue. It was not clear if one or more than one officer opened fire.
Witnesses told KTLA they heard multiple gunshots, then saw an officer kneel down and open fire.
The male officer who was involved suffered a graze wound, and one suspect, described by Bertagna as a suspected gang member, was also struck. They were both hospitalized in stable condition.
Two handguns were recovered at the scene, Bertagna said.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office was expected to respond to the scene for its own investigation.
