Investigators suspect a car that crashed and caught fire in Santa Ana may have been involved in a street race when the driver struck a boulder and lost control.
The crash was reported about 12:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Ritchey Street, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Erik Miranda said.
Arriving firefighters found the car fully engulfed in flames, Miranda said.
After dousing the blaze, crews determined the vehicle had likely been involved in a street race and crashed at a high rate of speed.
“We have indicators that the vehicle lost control, hit a rock on the side of the road and then spun out,” Miranda said.
At least one occupant got out of the vehicle and fled the scene before the car burst into flames.
Firefighters did not find anyone inside the car, Miranda said.
Any other vehicles involved in the incident also fled the scene.
