Two people were taken into custody in Santa Ana Monday after a report of a car-to-car shooting led to a police pursuit and crash, a watch commander said.
The incident began about 1:30 p.m. when a witness reported hearing nine shots fired by the occupant of a gray Cadillac CTS at a Mazda SUV near North Tustin and Franzen avenues, a Santa Ana Police Department watch commander said.
The Cadillac fled, and the Mazda then collided with a Honda. When officers responded, the Mazda took off.
Police chased the SUV onto the westbound 22 Freeway as its occupants threw what appeared to be drugs from the vehicle, the watch commander said. During the pursuit, the vehicle traveled erratically and on the wrong side of the roadway, he said.
The chase went through Garden Grove and Anaheim and then back to Santa Ana.
The driver led police to his home in the 2600 block of North Greenbrier Street (map), where the SUV collided with a cinderblock wall. The driver and female occupant ran from the vehicle, the watch commander said.
A witness said they ran from the vehicle without stopping and it coasted on its own, hitting the wall. The witness only saw a man flee the vehicle.
The woman was captured quickly, but the man entered his home, prompting police to set up a perimeter, according to the watch commander.
The driver was on a parole for a weapons violation, according to the watch commander. After a call to the house, he surrendered without incident.
The home was being searched for weapons, and CHP stopped traffic on the freeway to allow for a search of the pavement.
The Cadillac’s whereabouts were not known.
