A man whose 6-year-old nephew was killed when a vehicle he was driving was involved in a suspected DUI crash in Santa Ana has died.

David Cote, 54, of Santa Ana died 8:45 p.m. Tuesday at Orange County Global Medical Center, according to the county coroner’s website.

Cote’s young nephew, Ivan Sandoval, died about three hours after the Monday afternoon crash. The boy had been hospitalized in cardiac arrest and died in surgery, fire and police officials said Monday.

Cote, the boy’s legal guardian, was behind the wheel of an older-model BMW when it was T-boned by a Nissan Maxima on South Bristol Street and West St. Andrews Place about 12:45 p.m.

The drivers of both vehicles were suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to a Santa Ana Police Department spokesman.

The Maxima’s driver, 35-year-old Armando Duran of Santa Ana, was uninjured and arrested on suspicion of DUI, police said Monday.

No online Orange County or Santa Ana jail record showed an arrest this week under Duran’s name, and Santa Ana’s police spokesman could not be reached for clarification Wednesday.
